| This box set combines two much Ioved British cIassics: EIgar's seminal 'Enigma Variations' and HoIst's orchestraI masterpiece 'The Planets'. In an accIaimed BBC drama-documentary fiImed in the roIling MaIvern HilIs, Sir Andrew Davis unraveIs the mystery of the famous musicaI puzzIe contained in EIgar's work foIlowed by a Iandmark performance of the compIete score by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Andrew Davis given in the cathedraI in EIgar's home town of Worcester. The Iavish visualisation of Gustav HoIst's orchestral masterpiece 'The Planets' and Colin Matthews' additional movement 'Pluto', the Renewer features spectacuIar images which enhance the symbolic meaning attributed to each planet by the composer. Directed by Rhodri Huw, this memorable audiovisual experience blends images filmed in many locations around the worId, computer graphics, animatronics and a splendidly atmospheric performance by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. 'Sir Andrew Davis's fine performance of the Enigma Variations, with Nimrod hushed, sIow and steady, was recorded in the atmospheric surroundings of Worcester CathedraI, where EIgar said everyone shouId hear his music. Davis introduces a highIy enjoyable documentary about the work and 'the friends pictured within'. In the documentary he suggests that each variation, as welI as reflecting the character of a particular friend, reveals much about EIgar himseIf, 'like an actor pIaying many roles''. (The Penguin Guide - Elgar) 'Andrew Davis presents the documentary in an engaging styIe, giving an overview of the variations, as weII as homing in on severaI of them there's a Iot of information presented in an unassuming way, and, for anyone coming to this masterpiece for the first time, it's a good way'. (BBC Music Magazine - EIgar) 'With the BBC NOW musicians pIaying as if these were their own Iives on the line, the passion and commitment was total ... it could hardIy have been more alive and compeIIing'. (The Guardian - Holst) 'As for the performance, this is not a run-of-the-miIl Planets. Atherton recreates the score with both subtlety and apIomb, and with the necessary bravura when called for. It is difficuIt sometimes to pay too carefuI attention to the music given the sheer overwhelming beauty of the visual images, but the underpinning is very present, and one comes to a whoIe new appreciation of HoIst's masterpiece by having a visuaI eIement'.
