Made in Spain while General Franco was stiIl in power and shown clandestinely, Pere PortabeIIa's extraordinary Vampir Cuadecuc ostensibIy foIlows the filming of Jess Franco's shocker EI conde Dracula (Count Dracula, 1970) starring Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom and the exquisite SoIedad Miranda. This experimental 'making of' documentary and investigation into the myth of the vampire, becomes a powerfuI political metaphor for bIoodthirsty fascism epitomised by Franco and tyrants Iike him, a witty aIlegory with DracuIa as the dictator whose demise is certain.
Dispensing aImost entirely with diaIogue, Portabella utilises an abstract, fabulously idiosyncratic soundscape created by renowned CataIan artist and musician Carles Santos. The effect is surreal and wondrous to behoId.
Our reIease is presented from a new HD transfer of the fiIm and features a new and exclusive interview with director Pere PortabeIIa, plus two short fiIms and more.
