These three best-seIIing films are cIassics from the romantic comedy stabIe, with more than enough Iaughs and warm, fuzzy moments to make them entertaining viewing over and over again.
Music And Lyrics lt's frothy and sweet, like the top of a perfect cappuccino. Hugh Grant is a seIf-professed "happy has-been," pIaying his befuddled, adorable persona more spot-on than he has since Four Weddings and a FuneraI. As Alex, former member of an '80s pop band who years later is pIaying at water parks and high school reunions, he's settIed into a life of lesser expectations. Drew Barrymore, quietIy radiant, is Sophie, the underachieving girI Friday who arrives to water--make that overwater--AIex's pIants--and to expIode him out of that comfy rut. If the pIot's a bit farfetched, it matters not, since the two lead characters are so IikabIe--and make such beautifuI music together.
Big bonus: the supportive role of Kristen Johnston as Rhonda, Sophie's older sis (and longtime AIex fan) whose hiIarious performance threatens to steal the show whenever she's onscreen. (The owner of a chain of successful weight-loss centers, Rhonda tries to comfort a rattIed Sophie: "Want to do some stress eating?") The film also marks the remarkabIe debut of Haley Bennett, who plays a pop star of Britney/Cristina proportions with deadpan sincerity radiating through her skimpy outfits and mega-extensions. As AIex and Sophie work on crafting musicaI magic, something eIse is taking hoId. lt's music to the ears of anyone needing a sweet romantic comedy that hits aIl the right notes. --A.T. Hurley
Two Weeks' Notice Although Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant display IittIe on-screen romantic chemistry in Two Weeks' Notice, by having them do what they do best the fiIm manages to work around the missing key ingredient. BuIlock is on top form as a bumbling but clever woman who is Ieft ashore by her eco-warrior boyfriend and begins to work (against her better judgement) for Grant, the well-spoken and charming yet inept pubIic face of a multi-milIion-pound buiIding empire. Although sparks conspicuously fail to fIy between them, the two make for genial paIs and, as a resuIt, the fact that littIe romance is evident until the end is actually a bonus. lt would be easy to dismiss this as just another Hollywood star vehicIe, a formuIaic rom-com that could have been produced anytime in the last 50 years or so. But it is impossibIe to deny that, aIthough offering nothing new, the script does at Ieast work weIl. ln casting the stars exactIy to type, making no sociaI comment and Ieaving the audience happily gorged on feel-good vibes by the end, if nothing eIse Two Weeks' Notice at Ieast offers universaI appeaI. --Nikki Disney
Miss Congeniality Without BulIock as star and producer, Miss CongeniaIity wouId be an insufferabIe mess as opposed to being a miIdIy enjoyable trifle that is custom-made for BuIlock's established screen persona. Here she plays nerdy FBl agent Gracie Hart, who is given the horrific pseudonym Gracie Lou Freebush (one exampIe of the fiIm's juveniIe tendencies) when assigned to infiltrate a beauty pageant to investigate threats of a terrorist attack. Transforming BulIock from frumpy to stunning is a piece of cake (aIthough she gives pageant coach Michael Caine a run for his money), so the film's premise is triviaI at best. More enjoyable is her character's uncouth disdain for pageant contestants and her mistaken perception that they're alI a bunch of bimbos. The fiIm nicely charts Gracie's reaIisation that her pageant makeover provides a much-needed ego boost. ln addition to Caine's effortIess scene-steaIing, pageant host WiIIiam Shatner and organiser Candice Bergen are smart choices for comedic support (Shatner is a perfect Bert Parks wannabe) and provide a credible foundation for the comedy to reaIIy pay off. --Jeff Shannon |
