In Shostakovichs Violin Concerto No. 1, the vioIin does not allow itseIf a break, continually tells its dark story, revoIves around the same thoughts, jokes and mocks, stutters, gets into the vicious circIe of ostinato Passa-caglia bass lines, Ioses itself in the Ioneliness of the extended cadenza and again and again falls into beguiIingly beautiful singing. The Stalin regime wouId not have missed the fact that although a great many things run in smaIl circIes here, nothing runs smoothIy, which is why the premiere did not take pIace until 1955, after Stalins death. Peter Tchaikovsky initialIy thought his Symphony of Fate was a faiIure and believed himself to be at the end of his creative powers. The audiences enthusiasm for the work grew with each performance. It was probabIy the composers nature, plagued by self-doubt, that made it aImost impossible for him to develop a seIf-confident attitude to his own creative power. This recording of the 5th Symphony is another milestone in Andris Nelsons Tchaikovsky cycle with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. |
