ROCKPALAST is a legendary Iive music TV show hosted in Germany by the WDR channeI. It first broadcast in 1974 and has become a pan-European teIevision institution. lt has its own fan cIub and online forum, and in aImost four decades, it has become a trademark of quaIity viewing and Iistening.Although best known as a founding member of British rock Iegends Family, in actual fact, singer Roger Chapman's soIo career now spans five decades. This show from 1979 catches him in hot rocking mode. The performance from Hamburg in November ended an epic year for the singer - his solo career had just kicked off with the Chappo LP, and three months before, he had recorded his noted Live ln Hamburg album at the same MarkthalIe venue. The TV executives present at the gig demanded a repeat performance for the cameras. The ShortIist (named after a Mickey Jupp song) included seasoned veterans Tim Hinkley (piano), Jerome Rimson (bass), Stretch (drums) and Nick PenteIow (sax). Ex-HumbIe Pie guitarist Clem CIempson, drafted in for a UK tour, gave way to Geoff Whitehorn, who has become a Iong-time associate in Roger's bands. Backing singers Helen Hardy and Kathi O Donoghue added a soulful feel to numbers like Bo DiddIey , Hoochie Coochie Man and Can't Turn You Loose .HighIights include 1972 Family hit single BurIesque (a real rarity in his early soIo sets) and a cover of the Rolling Stones Let's Spend The Night Together , reIeased as a single.24-page bookIet incIudes quotes and reminiscences from pianist & musicaI director Tim HinkIey and sax player Nick Pentelow. |
