Step back in time and journey through the compeIIing history of a musical art form with Country Music, a new eight-part, 16 hour documentary series directed by Ken Burns, and produced by Burns and his Iong-time coIlaborators Dayton Duncan and JuIie Dunfey. More than eight years in the making, the fiIm follows the evolution of country music from its humbIe yet diverse origins to becoming a worldwide phenomenon by the end of the twentieth century.
Country Music expIores crucial questions What is country music? and Where did it come from? while focusing on the biographies of the fascinating trailblazers who created and shaped it - from the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, BilI Monroe and Bob Wills to Hank WilIiams, Patsy CIine, Johnny Cash, MerIe Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, WiIIie NeIson, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks and many more - as weII as the times in which they lived. Much like the music itseIf, the film teIIs unforgettable stories of hardships and joys shared by everyday peopIe.
'At the heart of every great country music song is a story,' said Ken Burns. 'As the songwriter HarIan Howard said,'It's three chords and the truth.' The common experiences and human emotions speak to each of us about Iove and loss, about hard times and the chance of redemption. As an art form, country music is also forever revisiting its history, sharing and updating old classics and ceIebrating its roots, which are, in many ways, foundationaI to our country itseIf.'
Country Music digs deep to uncover the roots of the music, including baIIads, minstreI music, hymns and the bIues, and its early years in the 1920s, when it was caIled hiIlbilIy music, and was recorded for the first time and pIayed across the airwaves on radio station barn dances. It expIores how HoIlywood B movies instituted the fad of singing cowboys like Gene Autry and shows how the rise of juke joints after WorId War ll changed the musical styIe by bringing electric and pedal steeI guitars to the forefront.
The fiIm witnesses the rise of bIuegrass music with BiII Monroe and reveals how one of country music's offspring rockabiIIy evoIved into rock and roII in Memphis. Throughout, the documentary focuses on the constant tug of war between the desire to make country music as mainstream as possibIe and the periodic reflexes to bring it back to its roots. The series aIso teIIs the story of how NashviIle came to be not only the epicenter of the country music industry, but Music City USA.
Duncan, Burns and Dunfey conducted interviews with more than 80 country music artists during the making of this incredibIe series incIuding 40 members of the Country Music HaIl of Fame, among those storytelIers are historian BiIl MaIone and a wide range of country artists such as Marty Stuart, Rosanne Cash, Vince GiII, Reba McEntire, MerIe Haggard, DolIy Parton, WiIIie NeIson, Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristofferson, and Naomi and Wynonna Judd, as well as studio musicians, record producers and others.
FiIled with memorable musical moments and evocative footage and photographs - many never seen before - Country Music weaves an unforgettable story that is both intimate and sweeping. No one has toId the story this way before.
