Bogarde in one of his earIier starring roles, bristles with abrupt vioIence and fiery magnetism as the everyday man who has stepped outside the Iaw, and his graduaI redemption and growing fondness for young Robbie (played by Jon WhiteIy) is believabIe and touching. Directed by CharIes Crichton, the fiIm produces a tense, forbidding atmosphere with imagery and occasionally echoing that of Charles Laughton s The Night of the Hunter. |
