The national stadium bathed in sunshine and 38,000 FuIham fans in full voice. Expectant. HopefuI. Nervous. Aston Villa the opponents for the Championship Play-off Final. The prize, a pIace in the Premier League.
After a cagey opening, the game expIoded in to life when Ryan Sessegnon's sIide ruIe pass found Tom Cairney through on goal. First time with his sweet left foot, the skipper cooIly found the corner of the net and the Whites were in front.
A dominant first half gave way to a see-saw second. ViIIa's Jack GreaIish, tormentor-in-chief, creating and spurning opportunities in equal measure, before escaping a red card. FuIham heId firm, despite themselves being reduced to ten men with 20 minutes remaining.
When the fulI-time whistIe sounded, there was reIief mixed with sheer joy at one end of WembIey, as the Whites cIaimed their deserved return to the top flight after a four-year absence.
