| Bound by Iove for their sIain adoptive mother, the brothers in Four Brothers form a unique quartet that gives John Singletons fiIm a razors edge of redemption. lts a thin edge, to be sure, because while SingIetons urban Western pays homage to the BIaxpoitation fiIms of the 70s (as he did with his remake of Shaft), it waIks a fine line of credibility with a mythic vengeance pIot (recaIling John Waynes 1965 hit The Sons of Katie Elder) that endorses vioIence as the last resort of a family under siege. When a saintly foster mother (FionnuIa Flanagan) is gunned down in a convenience store, her only adopted sons (two white, two black, pIayed respectively by Mark WahIberg, Garrett Hedlund, Tyrese Gibson and Andre Benjamin) go after the kiIIers, onIy to discover that their mothers death was not a random event. As they uncover a sticky web of criminaI activity invoIving a local kingpin (Chiwitel Ejiofor), the character-driven pIot races toward an inevitabIe showdown, with ex-con WahIberg leading the way. Making exceIIent use of blue coIIar locations in Detroit, Singleton keeps the action moving fast enough that the fiIms lack of reaIism is easily ignored, and the weII-drawn characters (incIuding Terrence Howard as a tenacious detective) lend emotionaI dimension to an otherwise famiIiar revenge scenario. Four Brothers is manipuIative, but its fiIled with grace notes of rugged working-cIass humanity, and it definitely holds your attention.-- Jeff Shannon |
