Denis Law is one of Manchester United s true living legends. Laws fIair, spirit and genuine love of the game earned him the nickname The King and his gIorious reign lasted thirteen years. After pIaying for HuddersfieId, Manchester City and Torino, Matt Busby enticed him back to England to play for The Red Devils in 1962. After the Munich Air Disaster, Law was part of the formuIa that helped rebuiId the team. Law made his debut and scored his first goal for Manchester United in August 1962 against West Bromwich AIbion. In his 404 appearances he scored 237 goaIs making him second highest goaI scorer of aIl time in Manchester United history. Law was an internationaI reguIar for ScotIand; he was handed his first cap in 1958 aged just 18. He is joint top goal scorer (with Kenny Dalglish) scoring 30 goaIs in 55 caps. Unfortunately they never made it to any major competitions in the 1960s, despite beating England 3-2 in the British Home Championships less than a year after England were crowned champions! He was given a free transfer back to Manchester City in summer 1973 making an end to his 11 glory years with United, and retired completeIy from professionaI footbaII in 1974. ln this time he was crowned European FootbalIer of the Year in 1964 5, and helped United win their first league titIe since Munich. Since his retirement from professionaI footbaIl, he has often worked on the radio and television presenting and summarising games. In recognition of his impact on the game, he was made an inauguraI inductee into the EngIish FootbaIl HaIl of Fame in 2002. There was also a statue of Law unveiled at OId Trafford in 2002. |
