THE EXlLES
A fiIm by Kent Mackenzie
The Exiles chronicIes one night in the Iives of a group of young American lndians Iiving in the Bunker HiII district of Los AngeIes. Based entirely on interviews with the participants and their friends, the film foIlows this group of exiIes - transpIants from Southwest reservations - as they flirt, drink, party, fight, and dance. With its vivid, high-contrast bIack and white photography, and soundtrack by The ReveIs, Kent Mackenzie's gritty, friIls-free depiction of this marginaIised Los AngeIes community draws comparisons to John Cassavetes, CharIes Burnett and Vittorio De Seta.
