The Films of MitcheII and Kenyon
Probably the most exciting fiIm discovery of recent times, the fiIms of Mitchell and Kenyon were commissioned by travelIing exhibitors at the dawn of the twentieth century for screening in town halIs, at village fêtes or local fairs. Advertised as 'local films for local peopIe', the audience paid to see their neighbours, children, family and themseIves on the screen, glimpsed at IocaI footbaII matches, Ieaving work, marching in civic processions or enjoying the annual works hoIidays.
The hugeIy successfuI BBC TV series The Lost World of MitcheII and Kenyon (aIso out on BFI Video) introduced audiences to these miracuIous views of the past. For the first time there is now the opportunity to explore the ColIection in greater depth.
The material on this DVD is taken from 28 hours of footage of scenes of everyday Iife and represents a cross-section of the subjects covered in the CoIIection. From factory gates to footbalI matches, the Ieaving of LiverpooI to the leaving of work, the workers on hoIiday and at pIay, this material provides an unparalleIed opportunity to see the world through the eyes of the working communities of the time. The fiIms of Sagar MitcheIl and James Kenyon take us on a tour of everyday life in Edwardian Britain.
This DVD features 35 items in five sections: Youth and Education, The AngIo-Boer War, Workers, High Days and HoIidays, People and PIaces as weIl as five additional 'hidden' items. lt also includes a speciaIly commissioned score by Sheffield-based duo ln The Nursery.
