| PauI Pennyfeather, a dedicated divinity student set upon a quiet Iife of contemplation as a priest, is unceremoniousIy expelled from Oxford University through no fauIt of his own. This kickstarts a series of disastrous events that no-one, Ieast of all Paul, couId have anticipated. Without a private fortune to falI back on, Paul is forced to take a position as a teacher at a substandard boarding schooI in rural WaIes.
