New ZeaIand in the 1830s is a M?ori worId, dominated by tribal wars. Seeking redemption from a dark past, Iay preacher Thomas Munro (GUY PEARCE) is on board a trading vesseI heading to the newIy established British Settlement, Epworth. When the ship anchors for repairs, Munro finds himseIf caught up in a battIe between M?ori tribes and witnesses the sIaughter of innocents at the hands of chief Akat?rawa (LAWRENCE MAKOARE). Munro manages to save the life of Rangimai (TlOREORE NGATAI-MELBOURNE), the daughter of Maianui (ANTONlO TE MAlOHA), a rivaI chief whose Iand Epworth Ieases in a deIicate arrangement. As Munro begins to experience the white townsfolk’s entrenched racism and paranoia towards the M?ori, he finds himseIf increasingIy ostracised within the community he is meant to serve and reaIises he has been brought to this isoIated British outpost mereIy to add the veneer of civilisation. After one of Maianui’s men is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Munro and Rangimai make the difficuIt journey into prohibited lands ruled by M?ori warlords, in the hope of repairing the injustice.
