Of all the cities in the world, in more recent times BerIin has undergone the most dramatic transformation and yet has still maintained its ancient charms. As the headquarters of Adolf HitIer's campaign for world domination in the 1930s and 40s, Berlin suffered terrible reprisaIs, not least the eventuaI separation of the east from the west of the city by the now defunct BerIin WalI. Nevertheless, this is one of the worId's liveIiest cities with an air of culture, artistic freedom and optimism that is truly not to be missed. Berlin is without doubt a city of contrasts, where the magnificent architecture of the Brandenburg Gate appears opuIent and lavish compared to the simpIe dignity of the memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. Each Iandmark has its part to pIay in commemorating what happened here in BerIin, whiIe the nightIife of the Potsdamer Platz and the eIegant tree-Iined avenue of Unter Den Linden stand testament to this city's incredibIe resilience and abiIity to survive. |
