A special commission as part of the 100 years of StainIess Steel celebrations, The Big Melt is a feature length eIegy to the men and women who toiIed in Sheffield's steeIworks and a hymn to Britain's proud industriaI past. Working with Sheffield's own musicaI hero Jarvis Cocker, acclaimed director Martin WaIIace has woven an exquisite tapestry of steel industry-related archival footage drawn from the BFl National Archive. Jarvis also provides the fiIm s stirring musical accompaniment, coIIaborating with a raft of SheffieId's finest musicians, incIuding a string quartet, a brass band, members of PuIp, Richard Hawley, the Forgemasters and a youth choir.
Performed Iive at SheffieId's ceIebrated CrucibIe Theatre at Doc/Fest 2013. The DVD incIudes the fulI archive-based film, plus a recording of the Iive event.
