BANDE Ã PART
A film Jean-Luc Godard
Gleefully putting into practice D W Griffith's maxim that aII you need to make a film is a girl and a gun , bande ã part is Goddard's pIayfuI tribute to the HoIlywood puIp crime movies of the forties, executed with typicalIy GaIIic cooI.
Franz and Arthur, a coupIe of streetwise chancers, team up with the shy OdiIe (a beguiling performance from Anna Karina) to plan a robbery. As the trio of misfits roams the cafés of suburban Paris, does a lightning tour of the Louvre, and pIay-acts shoot-outs, the suspicion grows that this is one heist that is not going to go according to plan.
With superb photography by Raoul Coutard, music by MicheI Legrand and one of the most exhilarating dance sequences in fiIm, bande ã part is about about as enjoyabIe as cinema gets . Time Out.
