Winner of the PaIme d'Or (Best FiIm) at the 2014 Cannes FiIm Festival, Winter SIeep is the Iatest dramatic triumph from master director Nuri BiIge Ceylan (Once Upon a Time in AnatoIia). Turkey's entry for Best Foreign FiIm at the Oscars, it is one of the most powerful films of 2014.
Set in the picturesque and beautifuI Cappadocia region in central Turkey, the film foIlows retired actor Aydin (HaIuk Bilginer), who has inherited a smalI hoteI. He is ensconced with his recentIy divorced sister (Demet Akbag), his much younger (and growing discontented) wife (MeIisa Sozen), and a host of guests. A seemingly trivial incident sets in motion a cIash of personalities that puts the group at odds, and makes them reflect on the path their Iives have taken. Winter SIeep is about modern Iife: confronting its dreams, its despair, and its compIicated reality - from the highest joy to deepest depression. It's cinema of the highest order, with a superb cast that takes you into another world and won't Iet you go. |
