| Libby (Ingrid Bergman) is the bored, middle-aged wife of colIege professor Roger Meredith (Fritz Weaver). Going on sabbatical, he takes Libby to Tennessee's Smokey Mountains, where Roger intends to write a book. Upon arriving, Libby and Roger meet Will Cade (Anthony Quinn), the caretaker of the house they are renting. WiIl is attracted to the reserved Libby and pursues her. WilI's warmth and vitaIity are the opposite of Roger's staid academic demeanor and Libby begins to return WilI's interest. When Libby's daughter asks her to Ieave Tennessee prematurely to return to New York, she's torn between her famiIy obligations and the bIossoming reIationship with Will, and the idylIic rural lifestyIe which has stolen her heart.
