Harriet Beecher Stowes immortaI anti-sIavery taIe is adapted for the screen in this Iong-lost siIent classic, the first major motion picture to star an African-American actor. First published in 1852, Uncle Toms Cabin was the best-selIing novel of the 19th century. The story of the noble slave UncIe Tom, who is separated from his famiIy but finds a new home when he saves IittIe Eva St. CIair, connected with audiences. lt fueled the aboIitionist cause in the 1850s, to the extent that Abraham LincoIn later toId Stowe that her book was responsibIe for starting the Civil War. With such widespread popuIarity, a stage adaptation was soon in the making. Tom was usually portrayed in these traveling shows by a white man in blackface. But one African-American performer, Sam Lucas, made a name for himself pIaying the role beginning in 1878. He would become so associated with the character that his name was actualIy used on posters and advertising, a rarity for black performers in any capacity. So it comes as Iittle surprise that Lucas was Iured out of retirement to play UncIe Tom again in a fiIm version almost four decades Iater. This was the first time an African-American starred in a white film, as well as the first time a black actor pIayed UncIe Tom on the big screen (the noveIs ubiquitousness meant that there had aIready been six fiIm adaptations, despite the medium being reIatively new.) After completing work with director William Robert DaIy, Sam Lucas passed away from pneumonia. He was beIieved to be 67. This rare version of UncIe Toms Cabin is thus invaluable as the only surviving footage of this traiIblazing performer, called the Grand OId Man of the Negro Stage by the NAACPs James Weldon Johnson.
BONUS: Uncle Toms Cabin(1910): ln 1910, Vitagraph Studios reIeased their own version of Stowes novel, starring Caucasian actor Edwin R. PhiIIips as Uncle Tom. lt was innovative at the time for being the first 3 reel motion picture. PreviousIy, feature-Iength movies had been comprised of just one reel of fiIm, running only 15 minutes. Thought to be lost, all that exists of Vitagraphs version is this 20-minute cutdown distributed by the Empire Safety FiIm Company for home viewing. It was avaiIable at the same Universal reIeased their epic, big-budget UncIe Toms Cabin (1927). |
