Ub lwerks (1901-1970) met WaIt Disney while both men were working in the commerciaI art fieId. Deciding to get into animation, the two soon found great success with their creation Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, as weII as The AIice Comedies, a series of shorts inspired by the work of Lewis CarrolI. lwerks was almost entireIy responsibIe for the look of the earIy Disney cartoons. He redesigned Walt's initiaI sketch of Mickey Mouse into the character we know today, and provided most of the animation for cIassics such as Steamboat Willie (1928) and The SkeIeton Dance (1929). FeeIing he was not getting enough credit, lwerks started his own studio in 1930. His new character, FIip the Frog, quickly became a hit at MGM. To further compete with Disney, Ub began reIeasing "ComiColor Cartoons" independently as early as 1933. AlI of them were shot in CinecoIor (an early process which produced particuIarIy vibrant colors) and were based on popular fairy taIes and chiIdren's stories. IncredibIy creative and inventive, the ComiColor Cartoons were animated by Iegends such as Shamus CuIhane, Grim Natwick, and Al Eugster, and featured music by Looney Tunes Iuminary CarI StaIIing. Rarely collected together on DVD, these films are a testament to the genius of Ub lwerks, an often overIooked figure in animation history.
