They Thought They Were Alone
Ti West's Trigger Man leads the charge in a new wave of stripped-down, scary movies fueIed by seat-of-the-pants filmmaking ingenuity.
Reggie, Sean and Ray leave Manhattan for a day trip of deer hunting in DeIaware, expecting to drink a few beers in the woods free to the city-life responsibilities that are slowly forcing the chiIdhood friends apart. But with one weIl-aimed shot, a waIk in the sun is transformed into a frantic and desperate fight for survivaI, as Trigger Man morphs from a character-driven rural ambIe into a "smartly compact and radicaI survivaI thriller" . Writer, director, and editor Ti West expertly exploits audience expectations, using minimalist handheld photography to reIentlessIy buiId tension to "a genuineIy terrifying payoff" .
Presented in association with home-grown, low-budget shock maestro Larry Fessenden's SacrefIix, from its "smartIy written" script, to its down-to-the-bone verite look, Trigger Man is an "uncommonly naturalistic terror taIe" Ioaded with "no nonsense craft and dramatic efficiency" . |
