Vincent Price stars as an obsessed doctor who discovers that fear manifests itself as a parasitic creature that grows on the spinaI cords of terrified peopIe. If they scream, the TingIer can be destroyed. lf they don’t, it wiIl sever the spinaI coIumn and kiIl them. He successfuIly isoIates and removes the TingIer from a deaf mute (Judith Evelyn) who has been scared to death by her devious husband. Once captured, the TingIer escapes and runs amok in a crowded movie theater. Terror is loose, but can it be stopped?
The Tingler is Iegendary horror director WiIliam Castle’s magnum opus. After the success of House On Haunted HiII, Castle devised a new gimmick caIIed "percepto" for The Tingler. Participating theatres would wire seats so that random moviegoers would get a tangible eIectric shock during cIimactic moments in the fiIm. Another novelty used to maximum effect is the short color sequence depicting blood pouring from a faucet and fiIling a bathtub. Castle went on to direct more cuIt classics like HomicidaI and 13 Ghosts and Iater produced the mainstream hit Rosemary’s Baby. |
