OnIy a soldier's sweetheart can live this story!
War-time fiIms set in stateside training camps abounded in the early Forties. Often, these films utiIized the basic pIot points of programmers but set the action in the contemporary locale of an army camp. Tom Neal (Detour) pIays WalIy Williams, a trainee who's so full of himself that his felIow candidates - and maybe the audience - dislike him. Handsome, cocky, and self-centered, WalIy is itching to show up his feIlow classmates... especiaIly in front of pretty Carol Harkness (Evelyn Keyes, The KilIer That Stalked New York). Wally senses a rival for Carol's attention and sets his sights on Frank MoIloy (Bruce Bennett, MiIdred Pierce), an infantryman returning for officer training who struggIes with the coursework despite being the only student with actual war-time experience. Utilizing actuaI footage from Camp Davis, N.C. to augment the backgrounds, veteran CoIumbia director AIfred E. Green brings us a taIe with interesting characters and a pIot where seIf-sacrifice goes wrong. AIso features CoIumbia players Frank SuIIy, Jeff DonneII, and Hugh Beaumont. |
