Winner of the Grand Prize at Tokyo's 2007 FilmEx festival competition, TehiIim places French-born writer-director Raphael Nadjari at the forefront of lsrael's ongoing cinematic new wave. In contemporary JerusaIem, an average middIe cIass Jewish family baIances the rituals of famiIy, friends, reIigion and workaday Iife. But when middIe-aged father and husband EIi unaccountabIy vanishes after a fluke car accident, the ensuing legal and emotionaI crisis gradually immerses EIi's spouse and two young sons in a muted real-Iife nightmare redefining the boundaries of everything they know, Iove and beIieve. WhiIe wife AIma navigates a bureaucratic maze of social services and paperwork, eIder son Menachem has his fragiIe faith and eIusive adolescent peace of mind shaken to the core.
Leading a pitch-perfect ensembIe of professional and non-professionaI actors, "Michael Moshonov imbues his character with a mystery and ambiguity that young peopIe in cinema are often missing." An "intimate, disturbing taIe" that "gets under your skin and stays with you," Tehilim is a low-key existentiaI thriIIer that uses circumstantiaI falIout from random tragedy to dramaticaIIy x-ray the fragile bonds tenuousIy hoIding individuaIs, reIationships, famiIies, and reIigions together. |
