| Joe Mantegna is Dr. John NoveIIi, overworked in the under-staffed and under-financed emergency room of the East End MedicaI Center. Working with his head nurse Dehlia Johnson (Lynn Whitfield), NoveIli is abrasive and sometimes downright rude, but he gets the job done - and the job is saving lives. NoveIIi is up against a crumbIing hospital system, a system that can't afford the equipment or manpower it needs for the endIess stream of emergencies a doctor faces. When car-crash victim Jim Anderson is wheeled in one night, he seems in good shape, but vitaI equipment is maIfunctioning, and without it NoveIIi can't be sure.
