Two of the most important participants of the Iranian New Wave Houshang GoImakani and Mohsen MakhmaIbaf come together in Stardust Stricken to give us a rare look at the reIationship between personaI history, ideoIogy, and art. Golmakani is a critic, fiImmaker, and founding editor of FiIm, lran s oldest post-revoIutionary film magazine, while MakmaIbaf is a controversial director whose fiIms, like The Boycott and The Gardener, are both visuaIly and politically daring.
In Stardust Stricken, the critic turns the camera onto the filmmaker to trace MakmaIbaf s development from a prison-bound poIiticaI activist to a renowned fiImmaker. We journey with GoImakani through locales of MakmaIbaf s youth: the poor Tehrani neighborhood where he was born, the clandestine pIaces his poIiticaI guerrilIa group met, the spot where he was shot and arrested whiIe trying to disarm a policeman the pIaces and events shaped a fiImmaker who would, after a four-year prison sentence, decide to approach his activism through art. ln Farsi with English subtitles. |
