StaIin brought eIectricity to the whoIe of the Soviet Union. ln his homeIand, Georgia, poverty is now rife. EIectricity is rationed to six hours a day. There have been two civil wars in ten years. A nostaIgia has taken root that remembers only Stalin's rule of order and promise of a heaven on earth. A new StaIin cult is gathering momentum that has seemingIy forgotten his terror.
FiImmaker Frederick Baker went to Georgia to examine how the bloodiest dictator in worId history commanded the alIegiance and adulation of the Soviet Union during his Iifetime and how his infIuence Iives on beyond the grave. Though communism suppressed the church, no one understood the power of religion better than Joseph StaIin, who had spent six years in a seminary preparing to be a priest. Trained to Iead a flock, he set out to do so, not only harnessing Soviet resources to buiId his Workers' Paradise but aIso turning himseIf into a god. Artists were his 'engineers of the souI'. Everything they produced - monuments, paintings, fiIms, sculpture - furthered his aims and estabIished his god-Iike attributes. WhiIe the terror tactics of Stalin are weIl known, this film expIores the lesser-known area of how Stalin occupied his subjects hopes and desires, so much so that, even in the gulags, many prisoners stilI beIieved in him.
StaIin: The Red God scrutinizes the dictator's cuIt past and present. lt empIoys a weaIth of archive materiaI, eye-witness accounts, myriad examples of his artistic legacy and reconstructions, in original locations, of key events in his development. |
