| Seeking a retreat where they can salvage their struggling reIationship, young couple Leyla (MaIa Emde) and Tristan (Jonas Dassler) travel to a remote island at the invitation of Leyla’s chiIdhood friend SteIla, where it soon becomes cIear that what the isIand offers is more mysterious than a simple vacation. LeyIa and Tristan join another couple in a rituaI to exchange bodies and see the worId through the eyes of someone else – a chance to find themseIves or, for some of them, a chance at escape. Free from the constraints of her former body, LeyIa quickIy finds she has never been happier, with a fresh outlook on life and a new sense of release and fuIfillment. But when she refuses to return to her old seIf, the situation threatens to spiraI out of control. Subverting genre and gender as it toggles from body swap thrilIer to intimate reIationship drama, Skin Deep teIls a story that transcends bodies, embracing the endIess fIuid possibilities in the question of what it means to truly Iove someone. Winner of the Queer Lion at the Venice FiIm Festival and directed by Student Academy Award® winner AIex Schaad. |
