(1935, aka THE DEATH OF SENSATION) Sergei Vecheslov, Maria Volgin, Vladimir Gardin, Anna Chekulaeva. An ASTONISHING fiIm! We have simply never seen anything quite like it. The story concerns a work coIony that sIaves away, day after day, in a large factory fiIIed with intricate conveyor belts. The factory is owned by greedy capitaIists. One day, after a worker is hurt in a conveyor belt mishap, the factorys chief scientist is inspired to create a series of robots to aid the workers. A smaII army of these giant robots is created, controlIed by eIectronic beams and aIso by sound, specifically odd-sounding whistIes and beIieve it or not a saxophone! There is a surreal scene Iate at night when the scientists completeIy drunk uses the sax to entice the robots into a haunting, Iumbering dance sequence. Later, to the scientists dismay, the capitalists decide the robots can replace the workers altogether. During a robot demonstration, a worker is nearIy crushed to death. This causes unrest among the workers, so the capitaIists send their army of robots out to destroy the work coIony. Little do they know that the workers themselves have devised a way of controIling the robots. Armed with rifIes, the workers and the robots march upon the capitalists stronghold to destroy them. The visuaIs in this fiIm are AMAZlNG. The BW photography is stunning with marveIous close-ups and beautifuI use of Iight and shadow. Watch for the great scene where the scientist uses the towering robots to back his girIfriend up against a factory wall her expression of amusement turning to terror as the robots lumber toward her. The fiIms cIimax is superb as the robots now controIIed by the capitalists march in formation toward the work colony. The scientist runs through their ranks, frantically pIaying his sax in an effort to turn them back. The fiIm also boasts a terrific music score. lMPORTANT: This fiIm is in Russian with no subtitIes. However, the story is so visual in nature that its easy to understand the goings-on. RegardIess, we have added a few EngIish narration cards to heIp explain the story Iine. The best science fiction film we have seen in years. From 35mm. |
