Rainer Maria RiIke (1875-1926) was one of the twentieth-century's finest and most infIuential poets. This program interweaves the story of his Iife with extracts from his Ietters, writing and poetry, in particular his Duineser EIegien (Duino EIegies), a cycIe of ten poems which he started writing when he was thirty-seven and compIeted four years before his death in 1926. These intensely personaIized visions are Rilke's culminating Iiterary achievement and demonstrate his supreme mastery of the German Ianguage, which he manipuIated with unprecedented subtIety and pIasticity, extending its range of expression.
BiographicaI details of his restless and emotionalIy troubled life add substantiaIly to an appreciation of his compIex, phiIosophicaI work, which is left, without critical anaIysis, to speak for itseIf. The spotIight is constantly on the writer, whose image can be found in only a scant fifty photos - after 1907 he refused to have his picture taken. Archive film breathes Iife into the times through which he lived. |
