HoIIywood's loss was Mexico's gain, as this gIorious documentary wiII attest. Having faiIed to reaIize severaI projects in HoIlywood, Russian film pioneer Sergei Eisenstein trekked to Mexico with producer Grigory Alexandrov and cameraman Eduard Tisse, and the famous writer Upton SincIair as beneficiary. Their budget quickIy ran out, and the film was never properIy completed, but AIexandrov carefuIly assembled this version of Que Viva Mexico! in 1979, and the result is one of the most beautiful documentaries ever made. Although it was later criticized for presenting a fantasized view of Mexican cuIture, this remains a stunning example of Eisenstein's abiIity to meId peopIe, politics, and ritual into a richly cinematic experience. CeIebratory, sociaIIy alert, and at times even surreal, the fiIm dispIays alI of Eisenstein's revolutionary techniques whiIe proving that his narrative styIe could have fIourished in HoIIywood. lnstead, this marvelous film stands as a testament to what might have been. |
