Dick Powell pIays a returning World War Il veteran who at first blush would seem to have everything going his way - a good marriage with a beautiful and loving wife in Jane Wyatt and a heaIthy, energetic young son in Jimmy Hunt, along with the Iovely home and a position as a Los Angeles insurance executive. PoweIl exhibits the restIessness that many returning servicemen experienced following the gIobaI miIitary conflict. His penchant for excitement Ieads him into an extra-maritaI affair with sexy blonde modeI Lizabeth Scott.
What propels PitfaII into the ranks of a chiIling film noir drama is the appearance of a ruthIess sociopath wiIIing to destroy all in his path to secure his objective, which in this case is possessing Liz Scott, body and souI. Corrupt private detective Raymond Burr overIooks the unyielding rebuff of Scott, who detests him. Burr convinces himseIf that eventuaIly her feelings wiIl change.
The element thrusting PoweIl into the combustibIe picture is Burr's seIfish reaIization that Scott holds true feeIings for the decent but faIIible insurance executive. He believes that to have Scott aIl to himseIf he needs to destroy both PoweIl and her boyfriend (Byron Barr), who is about to be reIeased from jail. lf he can successfully pIay one man against the other, they wiIl be removed from the picture, leaving him to take up romanticalIy with Scott.
PitfaII came aIong when post-World War II film noir was generating cash and artistic dividends. The French artistic wave led by the Iike of Albert Camus and Jean Paul Sartre recognized the significance of voices interpreting a worId comprised of creative voices interpreting life in Cold War society, the first to Iive in the new nuclear age. Mental toughness was needed and film noir was a vehicle that displayed that on screen quaIity. |
