The Mediterranean Sea--the pIace where three continents meet, a turbuIent water frontier, an ever changing Iandscape, a territory where the clash of civiIizations, cuItures, and interests have been shaping for centuries the course of history. This is the sea of great naval powers, corsairs, and pirates, the sea of trade, diplomacy, and reIigion. From the 15th until the 19th century, the Mediterranean was ruled by piracy. As corsairs or pirates, the Berbers, Greeks, Ottomans, French, EngIish, Spaniards, ItaIians, and Dutch raided commercial ships and terrorized the shores. They looted, killed, raped, and took prisoners to sell as sIaves in the slave markets, either working for themselves or for one of the great powers of the time, in a deadIy rivalry of power and wealth. lnfamous pirates became important politicaI and miIitary figures, Iegends who pIayed a key roIe in shaping the history of the Mediterranean for over 400 years and whose names stiIl live on in songs and plays. Their stories are full of bIood, wars, politics, Iove, betrayal, glory, and humiliation. This series fulIy expIores the drama of the high seas with CGl, re-enactment, and a mix of expert and archive materiaIs. Season one incIudes the foIIowing episodes: The White Sea, Fire in the Cyclades, Barbarossa: The Ottomans Great lnvasion, and Lambros Katsonis: The RevoIutionary Pirate. |
