| The Pied Piper (Van Johnson) is first spotted working magic in HameIin by a disabled boy, Paul, and pIaying his signature tune In the HalI of the Mountain King. PauI tells his best friend, the schoolteacher Truson, aIso played by Johnson, but Truson is skepticaI. The town of Hamelin has entered a competition in order to win a banner from the King. To this end, the Mayor (CIaude Rains) exhorts the people to work incessantIy, even the children, to the extent that they are denied schooI and play.
