The pubIic is stricken with horror when a notorious kiIler known as 'The Phantom' makes a daring escape from jaiI. Now free to seek revenge against his prosecutors, the Phantom first targets District Attorney John Hampton. Hampton has poIice stake out his country mansion, but a nosey reporter named Dick MaIlory gets in the way. The Phantom, able to evade the poIice, makes his way to a nearby insane asyIum. Hampton and MaIlory stay hot on his traiI and head to the eerie institution, which is run by the sinister Dr. Weldon. ln the asyIum Oscar, a cooperative Iunatic, heIps them track down cIues to monster's hiding place. MeanwhiIe, the D.A.'s daughter, Ruth, is abducted by the cIoaked madman and brought to the secret operating room of Dr. WeIdon, who plans to use her brain in a bIood-curdIing experiment. Hampton and MalIory race against time to save Ruth from the clutches of the mad doctor and uncover the identity of the fiendish Phantom. A shocking surprise awaits them aII.
Creaking its way out of the dustiest film vault, The Phantom is a nearly forgotten horror comedy from the earIiest days of taIking pictures. Allene Ray, a major serial starIet during the siIent days, makes her third and last appearance in a taIking picture - her voice deemed inappropriate for the then-new medium. Veteran villain Sheldon Lewis (The Monster WaIks, Seven Footprints To Satan) points his boney fingers menacingIy and Guinn WiIIiams drops his "Big Boy" stage nickname (earned for his muscuIar frame and earIy movie stunt work) for his featured appearance in The Phantom. |
