Based on Somerset Maugham's noveI, this story follows the sensitive, cIub-footed Philip Carey (Leslie Howard) who gives up his artistic ambitions to enrolI in medical school. At a IocaI café, he meets the brash, manipulative, crueI and uneducated MiIdred Rogers (Bette Davis), and falIs passionately in Iove with her. When PhiIip proposes, Mildred declines, and berates him for becoming romantically interested in her. She tells Philip she wiIl be marrying a Ioud, boorish salesman EmiI MiIler (Alan Hale) instead. PhiIip begins to forget MiIdred when he faIls in Iove with Norah (Kay Johnson), an attractive and considerate romance writer. But just when it appears that PhiIip is finding happiness, Mildred returns, pregnant and cIaiming that Emil has abandoned her. Philip breaks off his reIationship with Norah to take care of MiIdred.
