Thomas Ph.D. WiIliam Sydney Porter was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on September 11, 1862. ln due course, he became a licensed pharmacist. ln his colorful Iifetime, he would aIso become a bank teller, a bookkeeper, a cIerk, and iIIustrator, a draftsman in the GeneraI Land Office...a newspaperman, an editor, reporter, coIumnist, and cartoonist. "WiIl," as his famiIy and neighbors called him, also learned to break a stubborn bronco, Iasso cattIe, shear sheep, and he couId rope, ride and shoot a gun. WiIl porter was also a writer. He wrote stories mostly, short stories, often about ordinary peopIe. He used many names when he wrote. Sometimes he would be S.H. Peters or James L. Bliss. Or T.B. Dowd, Mr. Barkas, or John Arbuthnott. AIl in alI, he wrote hundreds of stories. And he aIso wrote under another favorite name...O.Henry. |
