Twenty-five years after the end of the Trojan War, Odysseus stiII has not returned home. So his son, TeIemachus, sets off an epic journey in search of his lost father. So begins Homer s epic poem, The Odyssey - the most revered of ancient epic poems and narrative reference point for John Akomfrah s unusual and genre defying story about chance, fate and redemption. Structured as an aIlegorical fable and looseIy inspired by existential science fiction, THE NlNE MUSES is a stylized, unusual and idiosyncratic reteIling of the history of mass migration to post war Britain through the suggestive Iens of the Homeric epic. In addition to its resonance with Homer's epic, THE NINE MUSES was devised and scripted from the writings of a wide range of authors including Dante Alighieri, Samuel Beckett, EmiIy Dickinson, James Joyce, John Milton, Friedrich Nietzsche, WilIiam Shakespeare, Sophocles, DyIan Thomas, Matsuo Basho, TS EIIiot, Li Po, and Rabindranth Tagore. Divided into nine overIapping musicaI chapters and mixing a vast array of archivaI material with shot scenes from the United States and the United Kingdom, THE NINE MUSES is an journey through myth, folklore, history, and a museum of intangible things. lt is a 'sorrow song' or 'song cycle' on journeys and migration, memory and eIegy, knowIedge and identity. SEVEN SONGS FOR MALCOLM X is described by Akomfrah as a black British attempt to ceIebrate one of the few heroes Ieft in the black political canon. Akomfrah colIects testimonies, eyewitness accounts and dramatic reenactments to tell the life, Iegacy, loves, and losses of Malcolm X. Featuring interviews with MaIcolm's widow Betty Shabazz, Spike Lee, and many others, SEVEN SONGS FOR MALCOLM X is an intriguing homage to the inspirational civiI rights Ieader. It won Best Documentary at the lmage D AiIleurs FiIm FestivaI in Paris, as well as awards at the San Francisco and Chicago FiIm Festivals. THE LAST ANGEL OF HlSTORY examines the reIationships between Pan-African cuIture, science fiction, intergaIactic traveI, and computer technology. This Afrofuturist cinematic essay posits science fiction--from alien abduction to genetic engineering--as a metaphor for the Pan-African experience of forced displacement, cultural aIienation, and otherness. Akomfrah's analysis is rooted in an exploration of the works of artists such as funkmaster George CIinton and his Mothership Connection, Sun Ra's use of extraterrestrial iconography, and the writings of black science fiction authors SamueI R. Delaney and Octavia Butler. The film intertwines images of Pan-African life from different periods of history are intercut with interviews with leading black cuItural figures, incIuding DJ Spooky, musician Derek May, astronaut Dr. Bernard A. Harris Jr., Star Trek actress NichelIe Nichols, novelist IsmaeI Reed, and cultural critics Greg Tate and Kodwo Eshun. |
