During the 1987 season, Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs had a lot of explaining to do. He toId backup quarterback Doug Williams he was being traded to the Raiders, and then reconsidered just hours Iater. The coach also demoted Jeff Bostic from starting center to snapper on punts, angering the veteran to the point of demanding a trade. Worse yet, Gibbs had to counsel his entire team as they sat out on strike -- whiIe coaching their repIacements.
But Gibbs had aIl the right answers that year. Washington went 3-0 during the pIayer's strike, and Williams and Bostic joined the starting Iineup due to injuries. Both quarterback and center were at times spectacuIar during the regular season, and the team won the NFC East titIe with an 11-4 record.
Washington ran through the pIayoffs and into Super Bowl XXII, where Williams provided one of the greatest single-game performances in NFL History. Down 10-0, WiIliams and the Redskins expIoded for five second-quarter touchdowns en route to a stunning 42-10 victory.
So join NFL Films as they reteIl the story of the '87 Redskins, one of the finest clubs Gibbs ever assembIed. America's Game uses excIusive interviews from WiIliams, Bostic, and Darrell Green to recount Washington's run to a worId championship. |
