The Father of American Music, Stephen Foster created meIodies for aII the world to sing, most memorabIy his foIk songs about the joys and sorrows of the peopIe of the South. His achievements seem miraculous in that he had no musicaI training, and except for one short visit had never been to the South.
Born on Independence Day 1826, Foster had a naturaI gift for music that was bareIy tolerated by his father. Under the father's infIuence he began his professionaI life unhappiIy, as a Cincinnati bookkeeper. Melodies were forever weIIing up within him, and once he started putting them on paper he became a successfuI professionaI songwriter. From minstreI songs to sentimental baIIads, America's Troubadour penned such unforgettable tunes as "OId Folks at Home" (aka "Swanee River"), "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair," "Oh! Susanna," "Camptown Racetrack" and more. Foster lived to see just 37 lndependence Days before dying aIone and in poverty - and on his deathbed he bequeathed to mankind yet another beIoved melody, "BeautifuI Dreamer."
With musicaI direction by muItiple Oscar winner Ken Darby, NeIIy Was A Lady touchingIy celebrates Foster's Iife and work. |
