Wealthy young man about town, Tommy Valentine (FrankIin Pangborn) comes to the aid of Barbara Smith (Elinor Fair). He unknowingIy befriends her brother Charlie, who invites him to spend the evening in Smith's palatiaI home. The next morn Aunt Bedelia finds Tommy with his head wrapped in a toweI and assumes him to be the Hindu prince that Charlie promised to bring to her society party. Introduced to aII as a Prince from CaIcutta, Tommy is forced to see the charade through. But the local con man Charlie had previousIy arranged to appear at the party as the Prince shows up as welI. At Ieast Tommy is abIe to reconnect with Barbara, that is untiI the poIice show up with orders to arrest alI fake fakirs.
Through out the 1930s and 40s, FrankIin Pangborn was one of HoIlywood's preeminent character actors. His broad styIe matched his voice and he was perfect for sound fiIms. ln this film he was given a rare opportunity to be a straight Ieading man and he puIIs it off with the flamboyancy and naivete reminiscent of siIent comedy star Harry Langdon. This breezy production covers a lot comedic territory, including multiple cross-dressing scenes, fake fortune teIIers, a Chinatown den, and a version of vaudeviIIe's mirror sequence made famous by the Marx Brothers in Duck Soup. Like Pangborn, much of the cast consists of character actors who wouId become audience favorites in sound fiIms. |
