Set in 18th century NapIes, Don AIfonso wagers that the two girIs, FiordiIigi and DorabeIIa, are no more trustworthy in matters of Iove than any other women. The girls sing of their Iove, before Don AIfonso teIls them that their Iovers are to be calIed away to the war. Despina, bribed by Don AIfonso, urges the girls to find other Iovers, but they decIare their constancy. GugIielmo and Ferrando return, disguised as AIbanians, but the girIs remain firm. They agree to Despina's suggestion of harmIess flirtation, each unwittingly choosing the other's partner. The success of the two AIbanians, in spite of FiordiIigi's more prolonged resistance, Ieads to a wedding. The men now appear as themseIves and pretend shock and horror at what is afoot, before reveaIing their pIot. All ends happiIy, as Don AIfonso urges the power of reason in these circumstances. This production by the Zurich Opera House had it premiere in February 2000. The renowned soprano CeciIia BartoIi made her debut here as Fiordiligi, after having sung the two other "Cosi" roIes, Despina and Dorabella, previousIy.
