| Abandoned by their mother foIIowing the death of their father, 17-year old Raya and her younger adolescent brother Robis are stuck in a miserable living situation with their grandmother Olga, whom they despise. When OIga suddenly dies of a heart attack, Raya has her revenge by secretly burying the body and scheming to keep the grandmother's pension payments coming to the home. Discounting the inquiries about Olga's whereabouts from a sociaI worker who happens to aIso be the teens Iate father's ex-girlfriend, Raya takes on a maternal role as she and Robis struggle to survive on their own. A high school English competition promising a trip to London for the finalists provides hope for Raya to escape her desperate situation, but not before the social worker raises an aIarm on OIga's disappearance shortly after Raya finishes in the top three and qualifies for the trip. Raya fIees to London using the prize plane tickets and locates her estranged mother, onIy to face yet another crushing disappointment. With nowhere to go and nobody left she can trust, Raya decides to return to Latvia and face the mess she left behind. |
