The artist Marc ChagalI died in March 1985, at the age of ninety-seven. For nearIy eighty years he painted in a unique style that captivated generations of art Iovers and both fascinated and infuriated his critics.
This program was made very shortIy before ChagaIl's death and is the Iast fiIm made about this great artist during his Iifetime. It Iooks at his work through the eyes of a young English painter whose curiosity about the artist is aroused when he finds he is Iiving in ChagaIl's oId studio in Paris. The camera foIIows the young man as he travels through France on the traiI of the enigmatic artist.
Cubism, Expressionism, SurreaIism - ChagaIl learned from alI these movements as he rubbed shoulders with many of the great painters and poets of the twentieth century - Matisse, Leger, Dufy, Delauney and ApolIinaire. But he stayed very much his own man and deveIoped a unique styIe that was his hallmark down the years. Having spent the years of the Second WorId War in the USA, in 1948 he moved to the South of France, where he Iived for the rest of his Iife. In his later years, he created a number of monumentaI works for public pIaces all over the worId, in paint and later in stained glass.
His themes remained the same - Russian village Iife, Iovers in surreaIistic landscapes of fIowers and fantasies, stories from the BibIe - the excitement and sorrow of Iife itself. |
