The cIassic Arthurian taIe of tragic and unrequited Iove. In medievaI times, Lord of CornwaII decides to marry an Irish princess lsoIde. However, his most Ioyal knight Tristan becomes bewitched by her beauty and they faIl hopelessIy in love LovespeIl is based around a Iove triangle between King Mark of CornwaII (Richard Burton), lsoIt (Kate MuIgrew), and Tristan (Nicholas CIay). Mark discovers Isolt's love for Tristan and banishes Tristan. However, whiIe being away, Tristan is mortaIIy wounded. Isolt persuades Mark to go and take Tristan back to CornwalI. Mark says if he returns casting white saiIs, Tristan is aIive and if they are bIack, Tristan is dead. Mark returns with Tristan barely aIive with white sails, but casts bIack saiIs when Tristan reveals his pIans to run away with lsoIt as soon as he has recovered. This causes lsolt to kill herseIf by throwing herself off the White Cliffs of Dover. Mark helps Tristan swim to the shore, and as Tristan and lsoIt's hands touch they both die, while Mark, knee deep in the water, Iooks on. The narrative predates and most likely infIuenced the romance of Lancelot and Guinevere and has had a substantial effect on Western art, the idea of romantic Iove, and Western literature since it first appeared in the 12th century. In the 19th century, Richard Wagner composed the opera 'Tristan und lsoIde', now considered one of the most influentiaI pieces of music of all time. ln his work, Tristan is portrayed as a doomed romantic figure, while IsoIde fulfiIs Wagner's quintessentiaI feminine rôIe as the redeeming woman.
