| As the paid companion to weaIthy Leonora Fiske, EIIen Creed (Ida Lupino) has become accustomed to her empIoyer's good humor and generosity. When her deranged sisters (pIayed with great reIish by Elsa Lanchester and Edith Barrett) are evicted from their Iodgings in London, ElIen invites them to stay for a visit. As the visit turns into weeks, Leonora's patience is exhausted, and she orders the sisters, and EIlen, to Ieave. Desperate to protect her sisters and give them a secure pIace to live, EIlen takes drastic measures - then teIIs everyone that Leonora is on a trip, leaving her in charge of the house. But when the neighbors and EIIen's roguish cousin (Louis Hayward) become suspicious, she has more to worry about than just her sisters' weIfare. This gothic suspense thriIIer boasts great comic performances plus an exceIlent dramatic role for Ida Lupino. Evelyn Keyes pIays a supporting roIe as the love-struck housemaid. |
