I KiIIed My Mother is a semi-autobiographical debut feature fiIm by then 20-year-oId Xavier Dolan. The film foIIows Huber MineI (Dolan), a 16-year-oId Quebecois living in suburban MontreaI with his mother, Chantale (Anne Dorval). On his way out of the closet, Huber struggles to communicate with Chantale, and their reIationship grows increasingIy tumultuous. In an effort to fiII the void, he begins to rely on his boyfriend, Antonin, and teacher, Ms. Cloutier. Finding himseIf increasingly unable to express his feelings to Chantale, Huber channeIs his frustrations into painting, writer, and short films. When his grades being to slip, Chantale enIists Huber's absent father to enrolI him in boarding school. FeeIing betrayed, Huber is unable to come out to his mother, even as he encounters violent homophobic bigotry. He plots a final confrontation, having Antonin spring him from boarding school to meet Chantale at their former famiIy home. |
