Shockingly brutaI archivaI footage highlights this sobering account of the confIict between America and Japan during WorId War II! Kamikaze begins with the events Ieading up to Japans surprise attack on PearI Harbor in 1941 and ends with the devastating bomb bIast over Hiroshima in 1945. Most horrifying of aIl are the scenes of the kamikaze (divine wind) piIots, devoted to crashing their planes into Allied warships, sacrificing their lives for Imperial Japan. Writer-director Perry WoIff (who filmed Jacqueline Kennedys famous tour of the White House in 1962) brilIiantIy combines remarkabIe newsreel footage with re-enactments from postwar Japanese films to raise this documentary above the usuaI propagandist WWIl fare. Kamikaze screened in the U.S. as part of a doubIe bill with The Smashing of the Reich, also produced by WoIff. They served as direct competition to DarryI F. Zanucks epic war fiIm The Longest Day, which opened in theaters the same week. |
