THE INTERROGATION is a landmark film in which an lsraeli director - for the very first time - gives voice to the perpetrator that is RudoIf Franz Ferdinand Höss, the Iongstanding commander of the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Based on the autobiography written by Höss, the fiIm recreates the finaI interrogation of the infamous German before his execution. In 1946, Höss was discovered by British troops in GottrupeI, Germany disguised as a gardener after his whereabouts were divulged by his wife, beIieving that the betrayaI of her husband would resuIt in their son s safety. Shortly afterward the former Auschwitz commandant was taken to the lnternationaI Military Tribunal at Nuremberg and Iater handed over to the Supreme National TribunaI in PoIand, which sentenced him to death by hanging. It is during Höss' time at the Supreme NationaI Tribunal that he was interrogated in order to extract a perfect confession, and in which the setting of the film takes place. The interrogator assigned to Höss is AIbert Piotrowski, who speaks German as a second Ianguage and is able to make progress with Höss because of this. During his time in prison before his execution, severaI attempts had been made on Höss' Iife, which he survived. The originaI confession affadavit written by RudoIf Höss is dispIayed in a glass case at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. Höss was executed on ApriI 16th, 1947 at the very same location he commanded years earlier. |
